How to Be Elegant

Elegance is not owning expensive clothes, nor putting on airs or an unnatural persona. To me, it is merely a by-product of practicing kindness, being respectful of others, and living with integrity. While a polished appearance in dress and a dash of red lipstick to brighten your complexion can go a long way in helping you to feel elevated, the below list are some of the more intangibles that I feel can make for a more elegantly-lived life.

  1. Practice gratitude, and be grateful for what you already have.

  2. Be genuinely interested in others. Everyone has a story to share.

  3. Practice inner peace. Do not let trifles eat away at your heart or steal your time.

  4. Do not multi-task. Focus on one thing at a time and do it well.

  5. Choose quality over quantity. Always.

  6. Remember good posture.

  7. Be an active listener and listen to others without interrupting.

  8. Treat each person you meet with respect.

  9. Send thank you notes.

  10. You are never done learning. Keep educating yourself.

  11. Don’t talk about yourself too much in conversation. Ask questions of others instead.

  12. (As a lovely aunt of mine taught me this mantra early on) it is better to be over-dressed than under-dressed. Dressing up shows respect for those whose company you share.

  13. Make eye contact when you are speaking with people.

  14. Be respectful of other cultures.

  15. Put away your phone while at the dining table or during conversation.

  16. Keep on the sunny side. Stay positive (your attitude affects how your mind will perceive future events as more negative or more positive).

  17. Always be on time for your appointments and invitations.

  18. Avoid gossip and diffuse negative conversations.

  19. You are your own fountain of happiness. Don’t wait for or rely on others to make you happy.

  20. Remember the magic words “please” and “thank you.”

  21. Be interested in the world around you. Stay informed.

  22. Take care of your physical body through moderation in diet, exercise, and enough sleep.

  23. Sprinkle compliments like confetti.

  24. Practice kindness.

  25. Don’t forget to smile! “"Happy girls are the prettiest girls” (Audrey Hepburn).
