Shine Bright Like a Diamond
A diamond engagement is at its most dazzling (for more reasons than one) the first moment you receive it from your betrothed. Keeping it sparkling atop your finger is another matter, as diamonds quickly lose their luster without regular (but simple) cleaning. When we selected our wedding bands, I also purchased a Tiffany jewelry cleaning kit, insisting that the solution contained within the beautiful blue box must be the only correct way keep up the sparkle. The truth is you likely already have everything you need at home for maintaining your fine jewelry.
Every week, I use a dedicated soft-bristle toothbrush, liquid soap and a soft cloth cut from an old t-shirt to clean my rings. I still store these things in the pretty Tiffany box I received with my cleaning kit (even though the original cleaning solution is long gone) to make cleaning a special occasion. I lay a washcloth in my sink to prevent rings from going down the drain, run hot water, apply soap to the toothbrush and gently scrub the diamonds. I rinse with very hot water and polish with the soft cloth to prevent water marks. Every chance I get, I like to have my rings professionally cleaned and settings checked, but since that opportunity is infrequent I recently also purchased a sonic jewelry cleaner, which I am very impressed by. You can keep up the sparkle with regular toothbrush maintenance, but over time deep cleaning is required, especially as dirt builds up under the settings where the toothbrush can’t reach. For travel, I keep another handy product, Diamond Dazzle sticks, in my toiletries bag. It’s a handy little paint pen filled with a diluted cleaning solution that you click to dispense and brush over your jewelry to clean.
